Ben Cross, Crosslands Nursery
Ben’s first talk was at the EHS in September 2014 and since then, has given over 750 talks across the country and is grateful to EHS for providing that initial platform. He then took us all on a heart-warming journey from when his great grandparents started their market garden under the Land Settlement Association based in Sidlesham in 1936 until today, to their nursery at Crosslands, Walderton. Ben is the fourth generation Alstromeria grower and is passionate about his business as they are one of the largest growers remaining in the UK. His talk was lively, informative and inspired us all to think about our English growers as over 90% of the UK’s cut flowers are imported. At Crosslands, they use no chemicals or plastic on their flowers or for packaging and therefore it improves the carbon footprint in the UK. Alstromeria are a cool plant to grow in our our climate and the plants at Crosslands remain in the ground for 30 to 40 years due to their correct management and conditions. At present, Ben and his team of six, are pulling approximately 30,000 to 40,000 flower stalks a week and are constantly looking at different ways of marketing. Their flowers are available in local shops, farm shops and to order on line for that special occasion. With over 50 varieties and lasting at least two to three weeks, they are an excellent flower to choose. We are all grateful to Ben for his talk and wish his business all the best for the future.
