Sarah Jane Walker's Beach Road Garden

Prior to the pandemic the garden was a typical back lawn and a few beds, with the kids trampoline and full sized football goal. As the kids grew up (and the football got too dangerous in the garden) Sarah Jane reclaimed back some of the space, and during COVID created 6 raised beds at the bottom and installed a shed, made two composters.

First couple of years of the renovation Sarah Jane grew veggies and the odd cut flower.

Sarah Jane has always loved gardening and knew the garden could be a lot more. She visited Californian in 2023 and met a brilliant cut flower grower whose pastel and peachy dahlias and flowers were game changing. She knew that lots of what they grow in Cali would work in the garden. SO her journey into loving Dahlias started! Then when she visited the RHS show Chelsea the garden found more structure.

Sarah Jane builds stuff, so designed and made a greenhouse out of reclaimed wood over one winter and upgraded the raised beds. then made two full size swing beds for the family, that sit behind the garage in a real sunny hot spot last year.

Together with her husband she dug a Koi pond last year, and surrounded the pond with reclaimed cedar fencing and a metal and cedar wood bridge. Learnt a lot about water plants!

The front garden was a typical lawned boring space, and Sarah Jane made a decision to try a drought resistant gravel / shingle design inspired by Derek Jarman in 2023. She says she has learned so much about putting the right plants in the right spot in the front garden, mixing some cottage plants with grasses, some total failures and surprising successes!
