We were very lucky with the weather on our day to the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. The 48 people enjoyed the day and many of us came back with bargains and new plants.
Several of us met for a reviving drink at 12 noon before heading off once more to see the show gardens, marquees and the multiple stalls.

Sunday 2nd July - 2pm to 4.30pm
It was great to see so many members at the Summer Garden Party on Sunday 2nd July which was held in Angela Baldry’s lovely garden.
The weather was kind to us and thanks to all the members who offered to make food we were able to lay on a delicious spread of savoury sandwiches and quiche, followed by lots of homemade cakes, biscuits and sweet pastries.
The quiz set by Lyn Davies was a great success and led us all round Angela’s extensive garden including into the fairy garden behind the pavilion.
A BIG THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped us set up before the event, wash up during and after the tea and helped pack away and of course to Angela for letting us use her garden.
A selection of photos from the day are in the gallery.

Mary Anne says “We moved here seven years ago from Kent, but I have only recently found the time and energy to devote to developing the garden! I decided I needed a project to focus on having had Covid quite badly, right at the beginning of the pandemic, after just completing radiotherapy! So I decided to try and construct a small vegetable garden on a rough patch behind the garage, with mediocre results! I have persevered, but don’t feel I’ve been terribly adventurous & still have an enormous amount to learn!!!
The main garden is around 25×10metres, with borders around a reasonable lawn (until the recent drought There is a pergola overlooking a pond with flowing water (with irises and lilies), & this definitely attracts a reasonable variety of birds,& the blackbirds provide endless amusement taking their baths! I have started growing different varieties of grasses, ferns, heathers, Heuchara,& roses around the pond. Newts, frogs, dragonflies, water skaters & Mayflies seem to enjoy the pond!
There are a few trees; including fig (not yet borne fruit!), Banksia, & an enormous variety of shrubs throughout the garden, including several hydrangea imported from Kent & a beech hedge runs along one side of the drive. Honeysuckle, along with clematis, passion flower are at varying stages of growth! There are numerous plants in beds, planters and hanging baskets throughout the front garden, side entrance to the patio & main garden areas.
This is all still work in progress, but please DO come and visit me and I would welcome any advice & encouragement to a comparative newcomer to a proper garden! My garden in Kent comprised 160 trees in an acre of land across the road from the house, with a tiny bed, along with a minute front garden, and a lovely courtyard shared with lovely neighbours, so I’m on a huge learning curve!!
Postcode to help you locate the house is PO10 7UH

Enjoy Chawton House’s gardens when the grounds are carpeted with hundreds of snowdrops. A symbol of hope, snowdrops signal spring is around the corner.
Chawton House, an intimate manor house, was once owned by Jane Austen’s brother Edward Knight. Jane was a frequent visitor to the estate. Some believe Mr Knightley’s Donwell Abbey in Austen’s Emma was modelled on Chawton.
Follow in Jane’s footsteps and wander through the grounds and snowdrops on the South Lawn, in the Wilderness and the Lime Avenue with its impressive views. Other highlights include the ha-ha, the Walled Garden and Shrubbery.
During the trip, you can explore the house which not only holds Austen and Knight family heirlooms, but also a wealth of literary history: Chawton is an internationally respected research centre for historical women’s writing, housing a library of over 10,000 rare women’s books which you can enjoy a small sample of!
Note re mobility: The grounds of Chawton has a number of small hills, slopes and steps and the ground in the Wilderness is uneven and may be muddy. In the house there are a number of steps/stairs to be navigated.
Lunch will be at the Rose and Crown pub, widely believed to have been built by Jane’s brother. Not included in the price
After lunch, you will have time for a spot of retail therapy in a nearby garden and homeware store.

Coach trip to the Sculpture by the Lakes in Pallington, Nr Dorchester followed by a visit to the charming St Nicholas Church in Moreton.
Cost will be £36.50.
Sculpture by the Lakes
This is a beautiful 26 acre botanic garden set around lakes and the river Frome which gives a tranquil oasis to enjoy a symmetry of nature and art. There are about 120 sculptures, many by the owner Simon Gudgeon, and they complement the setting so well. It is one of the eight UK botanic gardens.
It is a lovely example of how nature and art can combine, the focus being on conservation of unusual trees and shrubs. The owner took it over in 2007, when over 1,000 trees and shrubs were planted.
The walk is quite level and paths are well maintained. The kitchen garden is well worth visiting too.
There is a very nice café for coffee or lunch, a fine gallery where you can see further works of art, and the Makers’ Yard to visit and maybe even purchase some special items?
You are very welcome to bring a picnic for lunch as there are many pleasant seating areas around the lakes.
From here we will visit St Nicholas Church in Moreton, about 10 mins away. It is a very lovely historic church and a short talk is available to us. In the graveyard is the grave of T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia).
The cost to include: the coach travel by Westrings, entry to the Sculpture Lakes on a group ticket, short talk at the church, and driver’s tip is £36.50.

RHS - Dogwood
Join Mark Porter on the 18th April, when he will share his skill and knowledge of creating a winter garden. Mark says, structure and texture are key. Colour is everywhere in the garden even in winter, while the interplay of light and shade make it deeply atmospheric. His talk will include a demonstration of taking cuttings from dogwood and willow stems, and you will have the opportunity to take some away and try this at home.
Mark is a trustee of the National Garden Scheme and became a vice president of the RHS in 2023, also acting as judge for their show gardens. In his role as chair of Britain in Bloom, he helps to inspire local horticultural groups to bring about positive change in their communities.
For the past nine years, Mark has opened his own garden, the Down House, and vineyard for the NGS. He bought the house, overlooking the Itchen Valley, in 2001 and created the large garden from scratch. With the help of his wife and advice from the designer Chris Beardshaw, he focused on developing a winter garden.

As well as nematodes, insects and mites that can be purchased to control specific pests in gardens and greenhouses are featured.
This will be a zoom talk only – there will be no physical meeting.

Ann Storton’s garden is not what you might expect at the rear of a 1960’s bungalow.
Ann describes it as:
Rather than a traditional garden of lawn and shrubs, it is more of a modern kitchen garden along with a social area. The garden was totally removed 5 years ago, redesigned by my late husband and built by a wonderful garden company from Bosham.
There is an unusual water feature, a hidden compass and a nod to Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech.
I look forward to sharing it with you.
25 Nore Farm Avenue, Emsworth, PO10 7NA
Sunday 20th October, 2pm to 4pm
Sarah Sanderson is kindly opening her garden for EHS members for a Sunday afternoon visit. This will be our last chance to visit Sarah’s garden.
FYI Sarah unfortunately strained her neck at the end of September. Although she is not in pain any more, she is been restricted in what she can do and as a result wanted members to know that the garden may not look as “tickety-boo” as she would have liked for your visit.
Sarah describes her garden as:
“A mature garden laid to lawn with well developed borders and mature trees. Small raised pond near the house, and larger octagonal pond with swing seat at the bottom.
Fruit and asparagus patch at the far end. The raised beds in fruit patch (and owners) are now disintegrating….so this will be the last time we will be able to open the garden.”
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available as usual, thanks to Heather and Gill.
There will be second-hand gardening books available for a donation to the charity, Perennial.
As usual if you have any plants for the plant swap you are welcome to bring them along. Remember to take any of your plants, still left at the end, home with you.

“We moved here almost 7 years ago, from Westbourne, it’s a sunny garden, dominated by a huge tree, which we have recently had pruned.
I love gardening, but I don’t follow any strict planting or colour schemes, I love flowers, pottery and all sorts of odd things!
The garden was originally lawn, conifers, a magnolia, camellia all very neglected.
The garden is evolving! Our latest development is a bricked chiminea area where we spend many summer evenings by the fire, I also look after lots of my friends “Art”!!
Address 10 Beacon Square, Emsworth, PO10 7HU.
In addition to the usual tea and coffee, Louise will be providing cakes for donations to Breast Cancer Now

“Having moved just over two years ago leaving behind a much bigger well established garden, Barry and I are learning to compromise on space and choosing selected plants to transform a more manageable sized plot to look after in our retirement.
Inherited shrubs and trees dominate the back border. Other original borders remain but have been replanted with a cottage garden on one corner and larger drought tolerant Prairie style planting (self seeding wild fennel ,scabiosa ,grasses ,verbenas and sedum’s) on the opposite side. Quirky in places, artworks to compliment planting and my passion, a theatre of scented pelargoniums!”
Barry’s collection of tree ferns will welcome you in our mini fernery in our front garden.
We look forward to your visit.
N.B. There is limited parking down Fraser gardens as it’s a cul de sac. The owner will be on hand to assist with parking as some neighbours have offered their driveways.
South lane and Cheshire Way are 5 mins walk from the property.
Address: 18 Fraser Gardens, Southbourne, P010 8PY
Tuesday 4th June, 10.30-12.30
We moved here in August 2020 to get a bigger garden – it had wide overgrown hedges, one fir tree, five apple trees, two sheds, a decent patio and 220ft of grass.
Fortunately I love gardening and enjoy digging so have made borders filled with shrubs, trees and perennials with the help of the exceptional garden centre sales and offers due to covid.
It now needs some character and ‘quirks’ so ideas and suggestions will be gratefully received.
Address: 28 East Cosham Rd, Cosham, P06 2BX
N.B. We have parking for 5 cars but you may get blocked in – otherwise road parking is in Southbourne road on left just beyond our house.

24th February 2024
Angela Baldry, Sue Attridge, Sue Vines and Stephen Driver represented the EHS at the Hampshire Federation Day at Sparsholt Agricultural College on the last Saturday in February.
The morning began with a fascinating Talk by Rosie Hardy of Hardy’s Garden Plants on how to prepare and design a garden for the Chelsea flower Show. Rosie has won 24 Gold medals but has now decided to retire from active showing but will provide plants for other designers.
This was followed by a short Talk on how to set up and organise a Flower Show, which generated a lot of interest from the audience and the speaker agreed to put the information in the next newsletter.
After lunch there was a short AGM followed by the Quiz Many of the Questions really taxed our knowledge . At one point we were in 2nd position but sadly ended up 4th out of 6 teams.
The day ended at 5pm . We all agreed that it had been a most enjoyable, interesting and informative day.
Angela Baldry ( EHS Trips coordinator )
March - December 2024
This will be our own “Gardeners World Viewers Video”.
We are going to be collecting photos and/or videos, taken by you, for other EHS members to see your garden. These will be collated and shown at an event later in the year.
It is difficult to have a garden that looks great all year, we all have peaks and troughs. This is a way of sharing your garden, or a particular plant, when it looks really good or even when that idea you had really worked.
Don’t be shy there must be one month during the year when you have had that moment!!
First we need to know if enough members would like to share something to make “EHS Members Gallery” viable.
So if you would be interested in taking part just send your name to events@emshs.org with the subject line “EHS Members Gallery” and indicating “yes, I would like to participate”.
No need to send any photo or video yet, just an expression of interest. Once enough people have indicated their interest in taking part we will send out further instructions.

We will be joined by two of the gardeners from West Dean Chantal Sparrow and George Ellis
West Dean Gardens Supervisor, Chantal, will share her approach to the maintenance and management of the landscape beds and borders, and will highlight some of the different West Dean planting projects in which she has been involved, both past and present, including the Winter Stem beds, the Dry Meadow and the more recent Sunken Garden overhaul.
George will provide an overview of his diverse work in the Walled Garden, focus on the growing of cut flowers and how he works towards a year round combination of productivity and beauty, and share West Dean’s approach to seasonal tasks, which combines horticultural rigour and traditional disciplines with some new approaches. The aim being aesthetic and productive success, alongside nurturing a healthy garden environment which enriches the garden ecology and is efficient in the use of resources.
Chantal Sparrow has been at West Dean since September 2019, progressing from Trainee, to Gardener, to Senior Gardener and now Gardens Supervisor. Chantal worked across all areas of the gardens during her traineeship before taking on sole responsibility of the beds and borders in the landscaped gardens. Chantal still supports the team across all aspects of the gardens when needed and deputises for West Dean’s Head Gardener, Tom Brown.
George is in his fourth year as a member of the team at West Dean Gardens, where he started on a one-year traineeship across all areas before taking on a permanent role in the Walled Garden. Prior to West Dean he completed an internship at Sarah Raven’s Garden at Perch Hill and the RHS Level 2 Diploma at Plumpton College, as well as volunteering at Charleston Farmhouse and Sissinghurst.

“We built a new house overlooking the harbour and started the garden from scratch. This will be our third summer here.
The front garden has a coastal look to fit with the location, so lots of grasses, lavenders, perovskia and poppies with loads of erigeron amongst the gravel and cobbles.
The back garden is quite different and is still very much a work in progress!”
Parking is in Beach Road and Kings Road.

Saturday 26th July, 2pm -4pm
We moved to Newells House some 11 years ago and the garden had been set to be low maintenance at that time. I happened to come across a local gentleman who turned out to be the original gardener here and he gave me some photos and advice telling me how the garden was originally open to the public. Over the next few years I set about adding back in some of the details of the original garden and also adding a few of my own, all under the watchful eye of of Dick. This is very much a work in progress and, unfortunately, my mentor gardener has now passed away but I still hear his words when I am working in the garden. Don’t plant that there, it won’t like it. If it’s not happy, move it. and other such words.
We are very much linked to Cutmill House in that we have the original mill pond which turned the water wheel in days gone by. Of course, that has all changed since the 1920’s when the mill was converted to a house. Newells House was built as the coach house and overflow guest house for the ‘big’ house before being sold off as a separate dwelling.
We renovated the mill pond more recently removing over 200 tractor loads of silt and taking it back to its original depth, rebuilding the sluice gate so we have better control of the water level in this area. Everything was done under the watchful eye of the local council and environment agency and all plants had to be removed and stored prior to the draining of the mill pond and put back once the work was completed. It is now a wildlife haven and is a joy to see.
We hope you enjoy seeing what is here as much as we enjoy living here.
Lisa
There is plenty of space on the driveway for multiple cars and our road is a no through road with easy parking too.

Tuesday 12th August, 10.30 to12.30
We moved here in August 2020 to get a bigger garden – it had wide overgrown hedges, one fir tree, five apple trees, two sheds, a decent patio and 220ft of grass. Fortunately I love gardening and enjoy digging so have made borders filled with shrubs, trees and perennials.
Now entering its 5th year the garden is maturing nicely – the trees are now more than sticks and looking definitive – changes have been made by me and the weather, Things are performing all out of time so it will be interesting to see what August brings. It now needs some character and ‘quirks’ so ideas and suggestions will be gratefully received.
